Scott Joplin: Collected Piano Works   Scott Joplin was truely the King of Ragtime composers. He did not invent the style, but his high quality of composition along with his extreme originality made his name well known among lovers of ragtime piano music. By all rights he deserves to be listed among the greatest composers of all time. If you like ragtime this collection is a must.
Learn piano by pattern! Great for those who don't have time for traditional lessons.

The popular sheet music business really took off running when ragtime first came to the attention of the American public just before turn of the century 1900. Although songs and some novelty numbers were being published in the late 1800's, it was ragtime that put the popular sheet music publishing business on the map in the early 20th century. And ragtime was written primarily for piano, which helped boost the sales of sheet music for piano.

Then came Jazz! Notice how many movies, old and new, have jazz in the sound track. Sadly, improvisation was not usually written into the sheet music during the swing era. Oh, maybe a few composers would add a few neat licks here and there but you couldn't just run to the store and buy a printed copy of a hot swing solo. Fortunately in recent years that has changed.

Then came rock and roll, also referred to as pop. Again all your favorite songs can be purchased on sheet music, but it didn't sound like the record. It's great that nowadays you can find some rock songs and solos written out just like the record.

The rock & roll industry in the 50's and 60's helped pave the way for soul music, rap and hip hop. Although the nature of rap and hip hop may not allow much content for a piece of vocal piano sheet music. And country music for the most part (particularly since the 60's and 70's) has operated side by side with the pop industry. Another words some of those that buy pop and rock may also buy country sheet music. And the opposite.

So there you have the popular sheet music business in the 20th century. Ragtime, Jazz, and Rock (pop, rap and country). Rhythm and Blues of course has a sound all to itself, but is quite often placed under the headings of pop or jazz. R & B actually predated rock and roll, which was really born from R & B. And again years ago you could not find sheet music for rhythm & blues that was faithful to the record.

Classical sheet music (and I use the term classical here to cover everything from Bach to Rachmaninoff) had to be written down note for note. Interesting that ragtime which first gave a boost to popular publishing was also written down note for note. Usually rock, rap and country musicians are not at all concerned about notation. Most of them can not even read the notes! Although most jazz players can read.

It is truely a wonderful thing that we have a huge amount of printed sheet music for piano, vocal and other instruments. Many compositions would have been lost if not for the publishing business. Even those who don't read should be thankful for that.
